TLDR Alopecia X causes hair loss in young plush-coated dogs and can be treated with various therapies, but hair may regrow and then fall out again.
Alopecia X is a condition primarily affecting young adult dogs (2-6 years old) of plush-coated breeds such as the Spitz and Siberian Husky, among others, and can occur in both sexes and whether the dog is intact or neutered. It is characterized by progressive hair loss starting at friction points and potentially advancing to the trunk, while the head and legs are less commonly affected. Diagnosis is made by identifying the typical symptoms in a susceptible breed and ruling out other conditions, with histology potentially confirming the diagnosis. Treatment is not essential since the condition is considered a cosmetic issue, but options include castration, which may temporarily alleviate symptoms, and pharmacological therapies such as melatonin, trilostane, medroxyprogesterone acetate injections, desloreline implants, as well as low-level laser therapy and Dermaroller™, which have shown promising results. However, hair loss often returns 1 to 3 years after castration.
