TLDR Effective alopecia treatment depends on the specific cause and includes medications and procedures.
Alopecia, or hair loss, is a common issue that can lead to negative emotions and a lack of confidence. Normal daily hair loss ranges from 100 to 150 hairs. Causes include non-scarring alopecia (such as androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata), scarring alopecia (like lichen planopilaris and folliculitis decalvans), and other conditions (such as diabetes mellitus and hypothyroidism). Diagnosis involves a thorough history, scalp examination, and tests like the hair pull test and scalp biopsy. Treatments vary based on the cause and include medical treatments (topical steroids, minoxidil, finasteride), updated treatments (tofacitinib), and procedural treatments (PRP therapy, microneedling, low-level laser therapy, stem cell therapy, and hair transplants).
