The Influence of Allium Cepa Extracts on Promotion of Hair Growth

Heang Hee Joo, Se Hwan Kwon, Hyun‐Jae Shin
TLDR Onion extracts can promote hair growth, but quercetin is not responsible.
The study investigated the effects of Allium cepa (onion) extracts on hair growth using C57BL/6N mice as an alopecia model. Various extracts, including fresh onion juice and ethanol and hot water extracts, were tested against controls like minoxidil and Acorus calamus extract. The results showed that quercetin, a polyphenol in onion juice at 47.49 ppm, did not contribute to hair growth, suggesting that other compounds in the onion extracts were responsible for promoting hair growth. This indicated a need for further research to identify these active compounds.
