TLDR Targeting the AhR pathway may help treat alopecia areata.
This study highlights the dysregulation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) pathway in alopecia areata (AA), showing significantly reduced AhR expression in various lymphocytes of AA patients compared to healthy controls. The study found that lower AhR levels correlated with increased IFN-γ+ lymphocytes and decreased IL-17+ immune cells, suggesting a complex role in immune modulation. AhR levels in CD8 cells demonstrated potential diagnostic utility, differentiating mild AA from healthy controls with high sensitivity and specificity. The findings suggest that targeting the AhR pathway could be a promising therapeutic strategy for AA, warranting further research into AhR agonists or antagonists to modulate immune responses.
