Studysummary This review discusses the adverse effects of anabolic agents in sports, noting cardiovascular, behavioral, and other side effects, but highlights inconsistencies in the severity of cardiovascular risks. Our plain-language summary of this paper — not a Tressless recommendation.
The systematic review evaluated the adverse effects of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) in adult athletes by analyzing 15 articles. It found that AAS use was linked to cardiovascular and behavioral issues, among other side effects. However, there were inconsistencies in the reported extent of cardiovascular damage. The studies reviewed were mostly outdated, indicating a need for more current research in this area.
