TLDR Combining stem cells with platelet-rich plasma improves bowel healing in rats.
This pre-clinical study in rats examined the healing effects of adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on inflammatory bowel anastomoses. Involving 35 rats, the study found that the PRP+MSCs group showed significantly improved anastomotic bursting pressure and increased tissue hydroxyproline levels, indicating enhanced healing compared to control groups. The combination also led to increased neoangiogenesis and epithelialization, although inflammatory cell infiltration and fibroblast activity were not significantly different. These results suggest a synergistic effect of PRP and MSCs in promoting healing, with potential clinical applications in gastrointestinal surgeries, especially in cases with inflammation or compromised patients. Further clinical studies are recommended to validate these findings.
