TLDR A young woman with a rare fungal infection showed significant improvement after treatment with antifungal medication.
In 2015, a 21-year-old indigenous woman from Paraguay was diagnosed with acute disseminated Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), a fungal infection caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. She had unusual molluscoid skin lesions on her face and systemic symptoms like fever, jaundice, and weight loss. Diagnosis was confirmed through histopathology and a lymph node smear. Treatment began with amphotericin B but was switched to itraconazole for 6 months due to kidney issues. The patient showed significant improvement after 2 months, with better skin and liver conditions, and no recurrence was noted. This case emphasizes the need to consider PCM in patients with skin lesions and systemic symptoms from endemic regions, regardless of their immunosuppression status.
