The Relationship Between Acne Vulgaris and Insulin Resistance in Adolescents

TLDR Acne in teens is linked to insulin resistance, especially in older males.
This study investigated the association between insulin resistance and acne vulgaris in adolescents, involving 80 acne patients and 80 healthy controls aged 10 to 19 years. Results showed that acne patients had higher mean levels of random blood sugar and C-peptide, lower insulin levels, and higher HOMA-IR values compared to controls. A significant association was found between acne and insulin resistance, with 31.25% of acne patients testing positive for insulin resistance, while none in the control group did. Acne severity was linked to age and sex, with older age groups and males more likely to have severe acne. The study emphasizes the complex relationship between metabolic factors, acne severity, age, and sex, suggesting these should be considered in acne management and treatment.
