TLDR Acne in women may indicate insulin resistance.
This study investigated the link between acne vulgaris and insulin resistance (IR) in 87 females aged 12–35, comparing them to 87 age- and BMI-matched controls without acne. Excluding those with PCOS, diabetes, or hormonal disorders, the study found that women with acne had significantly higher IR, with a p-value of less than 0.01. Notably, all participants with grade 4 acne exhibited IR, particularly prevalent in the 20–25 age group, regardless of BMI. The findings suggest that acne could serve as an early clinical marker of IR in women of reproductive age.
