TLDR Women with acne and PCOS should be checked for insulin resistance and related symptoms.
The study involved 81 non-pregnant females aged 14 to 36 years with acne and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). It found that a third of these patients also had insulin resistance (IR), as determined by HOMA-IR values. Those with IR had significantly lower FSH, LH, and insulin levels compared to those without IR. They were also more likely to experience irregular menses, weight gain, and acanthosis nigricans. The study concludes that all women with acne and PCOS should be screened for underlying IR and other signs of impaired glucose tolerance.
