Acne Tarda: Prevalence, Endocrine Correlation, Therapeutic Measures

    Sofia Sarah Rotshtein
TLDR Acne tarda is more common in women and those with darker skin, often linked to hormonal imbalances, and requires tailored treatment based on severity.
The study systematically reviewed the prevalence, therapeutic approaches, and endocrine correlation of acne tarda, finding it more common in women and individuals with darker skin tones. Hormonal imbalances, particularly involving androgens, significantly contribute to its pathogenesis, with conditions like PCOS often associated. Treatment should be tailored to severity: topical retinoids for mild cases, systemic treatments for moderate to severe cases, and hormonal therapies and spironolactone showing high efficacy in adult female acne. Isotretinoin is crucial for severe nodular cystic acne, and maintenance therapy with topical retinoids and azelaic acid is important to prevent relapse.
