TLDR Acne keloidalis nuchae causes scarring on the scalp, mainly in African American males, and early treatment is important to prevent lasting damage.
Acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN) is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the hair follicles, primarily in the nuchal and occipital scalp, leading to keloid-like plaques and cicatricial alopecia. It predominantly affects African American individuals and is associated with factors such as haircuts, friction, or trauma. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination, revealing firm papules, pustules, hypertrophic scars, inflammation, and alopecia. Management includes topical and systemic antimicrobials, corticosteroids, cryotherapy, laser therapy, and surgical excision, with early intervention crucial to minimize permanent scarring and psychosocial effects. The case report discusses a young African American male with AKN symptoms.
