TLDR The new rabbit model better mimics human acne symptoms.
The study aimed to establish an acne complex animal model using New Zealand Rabbits, which was more representative of clinical symptoms compared to the Kligman model. The method involved applying coal tar to the rabbits' auricles and injecting P. acne. Results showed that while IL-1α levels were similar to the Kligman model, the complex model exhibited increased ear slice weight, IL-6, and DHT concentrations, along with significant differences in local microcirculation. Additionally, the complex model demonstrated more pronounced epidermis hyperkeratosis, thickening of the granular layer and stratum spinosum, keratin-filled hair follicles, follicle infundibulum rupture, and inflammatory cell infiltration. This method was concluded to better mimic clinical acne symptoms.
