TLDR Anabolic-androgenic steroids can damage the brain, causing mood and cognitive problems.
The review examines the significant neurobiological impact of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) on the brain, highlighting structural and functional changes in critical regions like the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. Chronic AAS use is associated with neurotransmitter imbalances, including increased dopamine and decreased serotonin, leading to mood disorders, cognitive impairments, and increased aggression. These changes result in long-term neurotoxicity, with risks of depression, anxiety, and psychosis. The review emphasizes the need for further research, educational initiatives, and intervention strategies to address the neuropsychiatric impact of AAS abuse and promote early detection and mental health support for users.
