The study from September 15, 2017, found that 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1), a regulator of glucocorticoid availability, is expressed in human dermal papilla cells (DPCs). Glucocorticoids, which are stress-related hormones, were found to inhibit hair growth by decreasing cellular proliferation and the expression of Wnt5a, ALP, and VEGF in DPCs. However, the use of an 11β-HSD1 inhibitor significantly reduced these negative effects of glucocorticoids on DPCs. This suggests that 11β-HSD1 inhibitors could potentially be used to treat stress-related hair loss.
