TLDR Taking 5-ARI before prostate laser surgery may lead to more blood changes, longer surgery, and more urinary issues.
The study evaluated the impact of preoperative 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (5-ARI) administration on the outcomes of photoselective vaporization of the prostate using a 120W GreenLight HPS laser in 98 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Among these, 56 patients received 5-ARI treatment for at least 3 months prior to surgery. The results indicated that patients who received 5-ARI had greater changes in postoperative hemoglobin levels, required more energy during lasering, and had longer lasing times compared to the control group. There were also more cases of acute urinary retention in the 5-ARI group. The study concluded that further research is needed to confirm these findings.
