TLDR 5-α reductase inhibitors do not significantly affect male reproductive function but may reduce semen volume.
The study investigated the effect of 5-α reductase inhibitor (5-ARI), such as finasteride or dutasteride, on male reproductive function. The study included 40 healthy males of reproductive age who were taking 5-ARI for androgenic alopecia and compared them to a control group of 48 males not taking any medication. The results showed no significant difference in erectile function, semen parameters such as sperm concentration, motility, progressive motility, and morphology between the two groups. However, the semen volume was smaller in the 5-ARI group. Serum testosterone and FSH were higher in the 5-ARI group. The study concluded that 5-ARI does not significantly affect male reproductive function, but a cautious approach is recommended for men with oligospermia or ejaculatory dysfunction.

Dutasteride raises scalp testosterone by 99%, which may not be ideal for those sensitive to all androgens. Some argue finasteride's balancing act might be better, while others believe dutasteride is superior for hair regrowth.

      community Does finasteride/dutasteride reverse aging?

Finasteride and dutasteride can improve skin texture and reduce acne by lowering DHT but do not reverse aging. They may enhance skin and hair health for some, but can also cause side effects like dry skin and sexual dysfunction.

The conversation discusses the potential of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, like oleic and linoleic acid, as an additional treatment for hair loss, which may inhibit the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT and promote hair growth. Users humorously suggest using oils topically and discuss other hair loss treatments, but the main focus is on the science behind fatty acids and their role in hair health.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
