40785 Alopecia Following Solid Organ Transplant: A 10 Year Retrospective Review

Olufunmilola Adeleye, Rylee Moody, Ashley B. Wentworth
TLDR Alopecia is rare after organ transplants but more common in females, Hispanic patients, and pancreas recipients.
This retrospective study analyzed 3,732 patients who underwent solid organ transplants (SOT) from 2011 to 2020, finding that 39 developed alopecia post-transplant. The types of alopecia included unspecified nonscarring hair loss (46.2%), telogen effluvium (38.5%), and androgenetic alopecia (17.9%). The study found a higher incidence of alopecia in females and Hispanic patients, with pancreas transplant recipients having a significantly higher risk (HR=24.26, p<0.001). Topical minoxidil was recommended for 53.8% of patients. The study concludes that while alopecia incidence post-SOT is low, certain populations are at increased risk, warranting further investigation into potential under-diagnosis and risk factors.
