TLDR The 308-nm Excimer laser is effective and safe for treating patchy alopecia areata in children.
This study assessed the efficacy of the 308-nm Excimer laser for treating alopecia areata in children. It involved 9 children with 30 recalcitrant patches and 2 children with alopecia areata totalis, aged 4-14 years. The treatment was administered twice a week for 12 weeks. Hair regrowth was observed in 18 (60%) of the treated scalp patches, while control patches and patches on extremities showed no response. Only 4 patients experienced a recurrence of alopecia 6 months post-treatment. The 308-nm Excimer laser was concluded to be an effective and safe therapeutic option for patchy alopecia areata in children.
