14-3-3σ Is Required for Club Hair Retention

Ying Xin, Qin Lu, Qiutang Li
TLDR The 14-3-3σ gene is essential for preventing hair loss.
The study found that the 14-3-3σ gene was essential for retaining club hair in hair follicles. Mice with a mutation in this gene (Er/+) showed cyclic alopecia starting around postnatal day 13, with symptoms including hair loss and regrowth. Histological analysis indicated that these mice had thicker infundibular walls, dilated and plugged follicular ostia, and hyperplastic sebaceous glands. The hair shafts had weakened anchorage due to defective club hair structure, fewer anchoring protrusions, and abnormal desmosomal junction components. The results suggested that 14-3-3σ was crucial for the physiology of companion cells that anchor the club hair, and its deficiency led to hair loss. Further research was needed to understand the gene's role in companion cell function and differentiation.
