Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) is a large precursor protein that is produced in the pituitary gland and other tissues. It is cleaved into several important hormones, including adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which regulates cortisol production, and melanocyte-stimulating hormones (MSH), which influence skin pigmentation and hair growth.
