Malassezia is a genus of fungi that naturally lives on the skin of humans and animals. While it is usually harmless, an overgrowth of Malassezia can lead to skin conditions such as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and certain types of eczema. This yeast thrives in oily areas of the skin and can exacerbate symptoms in individuals with compromised immune systems or imbalances in skin microbiota.
