May 2011 in “Current Opinion in Ophthalmology” Autologous cultivated corneal limbal epithelial transplantation was a promising and well-tolerated treatment for severe ocular surface disease (OSD). A novel transplantation technique using tissue-engineered epidermal adult stem cells, immature dental pulp stem cells, and hair follicle bulge-derived stem cells showed success in reconstructing corneal epithelium in an animal model of severe OSD. Additionally, the use of a recombinant human cross-linked collagen scaffold and an FDA-approved contact lens were promising techniques for ocular surface reconstruction.
