    GlossaryMetabotropic Receptor

A metabotropic receptor is a type of cell surface receptor that, when activated by a neurotransmitter, initiates a cascade of intracellular events through a signaling molecule called a G-protein. Unlike ionotropic receptors, which form ion channels, metabotropic receptors work indirectly to modulate cellular activity, often resulting in longer-lasting and more diverse effects.
