    GlossarySkin Layers

refer to epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis in human skin

Skin layers, also known as layers of the skin or skin strata, refer to the three primary layers that make up human skin: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis (subcutaneous tissue). The epidermis is the outermost layer, providing a protective barrier; the dermis lies beneath it, containing connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands; and the hypodermis is the deepest layer, composed mainly of fat and connective tissue, which insulates the body and absorbs shock.
