September 2008 in “International Journal of Cosmetic Science” The study explored the use of high-charge-density cassia hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride (cassia HPTC), a quaternized galactomannan derived from Cassia tora and Cassia obtusifolia, as a hair conditioning agent. Cassia HPTC was found to effectively participate in the coacervate phase of conditioning shampoos, leading to efficient deposition on hair and providing superior conditioning benefits. Techniques such as cryoscanning electron microscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry confirmed the presence and characteristics of cassia HPTC deposits on hair. The study concluded that cassia HPTC improved deposition efficiency compared to quaternized guar formulas and could serve as an alternative or adjunct to traditional cationic polymers in hair conditioning products.
