Contact allergens are substances that can cause an allergic reaction when they come into direct contact with the skin. This reaction, known as allergic contact dermatitis, occurs when the immune system mistakenly identifies these substances as harmful, leading to symptoms like redness, itching, and inflammation. Common contact allergens include nickel, fragrances, and certain preservatives found in cosmetics and personal care products.
