    GlossaryHIV-1

virus that causes AIDS by attacking the immune system

HIV-1, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1, is the most common and pathogenic strain of the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). It attacks the body's immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which are crucial for fighting infections. Over time, HIV-1 can significantly weaken the immune system, making the body more susceptible to opportunistic infections and certain cancers.
