Anabolic steroids, also known as anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), are synthetic substances that mimic the effects of the male hormone testosterone. They promote muscle growth (anabolic effects) and the development of male sexual characteristics (androgenic effects). While they are used medically to treat conditions like delayed puberty and muscle loss, they are often misused by athletes and bodybuilders to enhance performance and physical appearance, which can lead to serious health risks.
