TLDR Zinc oxide nanoparticle biscuits improved growth and health in zinc-deficient rats without toxicity.
The study investigated the use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (25 ± 5 nm) in fortified biscuits as a nutritional supplement for zinc-deficient rats. Zinc-deficient rats were fed biscuits containing nano zinc oxide at concentrations of 13.5 ppm, 27 ppm, and 54 ppm. Results indicated that nano zinc oxide significantly improved body growth rate, appetite, and hair growth compared to traditional bulk zinc oxide, likely due to better intestinal absorption and bioavailability. No toxicity or significant histopathological abnormalities were observed in the liver, kidneys, and testis. The study recommended 13.5 ppm nano zinc fortified biscuits for mild zinc deficiency and 27 ppm for more severe conditions.
