TLDR Zinc may be linked to vitiligo development and severity, but its role is not fully understood and zinc supplementation benefits are unclear.
Zinc, a crucial micronutrient for skin health, plays a role in melanocyte proliferation, maturation, and differentiation. Recent research has suggested a potential connection between zinc levels and the pathogenesis and severity of vitiligo, a skin condition characterized by depigmented patches. Zinc deficiency can disrupt immune system cell activity, potentially leading to autoimmunity, melanocyte destruction, and depigmentation. Several studies have found significantly lower zinc levels in the sera of vitiligo patients compared to healthy individuals. However, the exact mechanism by which reduced zinc levels might influence the development and severity of vitiligo is still unclear. Currently, there is no evidence supporting the benefits of zinc supplementation in vitiligo patients, and no clear guidelines exist on the use of zinc supplements in this population. More research is needed to explore the potential benefits of combining zinc supplementation with standard vitiligo treatments.
