TLDR Zinc supplements may help reduce hair loss caused by levetiracetam without affecting seizure control.
This case series reported on three patients with seizure disorders who experienced telogen effluvium (TE), a type of hair loss, as a side effect of the anti-epileptic drug levetiracetam. Despite the hair loss, levetiracetam was not replaced due to its effectiveness in controlling seizures. Instead, zinc sulfate was added to their treatment regimen. All three patients experienced improvement in their hair condition while maintaining seizure control. The study suggested that zinc supplementation could be a safe and cost-effective strategy for managing levetiracetam-induced hair loss.
