Wavy Changes in Sinus Hairs Are Correlated with Feline Leukemia Virus Infection
July 2022
TLDR Wavy sinus hairs in cats are linked to feline leukemia virus infection.
The study investigated the relationship between wavy sinus hairs (WSH) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infection in 358 cats, including 56 with WSH. It found a significant correlation between WSH and FeLV antigen positivity, with 89.3% of cats with WSH testing positive for FeLV. Multivariate analysis confirmed this association. Histopathological analysis revealed narrowing, degeneration, and tearing of the hair medulla in cats with WSH, along with mild mononuclear cell infiltration but no degeneration or necrosis. FeLV antigens were detected in various epithelial cells, including sinus hair follicles. The findings suggested that WSH could be a useful indicator for FeLV infection control, although the exact pathogenesis of these changes remained unclear.
