TLDR Japanese vitiligo patients and their families often have other autoimmune diseases.
The study investigated the occurrence of autoimmune diseases in 133 Japanese patients with generalized vitiligo and their families. It found that 20.3% of the patients had autoimmune diseases, with autoimmune thyroid disease (12%) and alopecia areata (5.3%) being the most common. Additionally, 26.3% had a family history of generalized vitiligo and/or other autoimmune diseases. The findings suggested a genetically determined susceptibility to both vitiligo and other autoimmune disorders among Japanese vitiligo patients.
