TLDR Vitamins might not effectively treat hair loss and can sometimes be harmful.
Alopecia can be temporary or permanent, and proper diagnosis is crucial for selecting the right treatment. While reassurance is important, there is no definitive cure for alopecia, and most treatments aim to manage the condition. Patients often turn to over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements to combat hair loss, but evidence supporting their effectiveness is minimal, and there are reports of toxicity. Low levels of vitamins have been associated with androgenic alopecia and alopecia areata, while both low and high levels of vitamin A can cause telogen effluvium. Additionally, a lack of vitamin C can lead to hair shaft irregularity.
