TLDR Low vitamin D levels can lead to increased parathyroid hormone levels.
The study investigated the impact of vitamin D deficiency on parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels in 2,226 patients. It was found that 22.3% of the patients had elevated PTH levels, with 92% of these cases attributed to secondary hyperparathyroidism. The average vitamin D level among the patients was 16.4 ng/mL, and 64% of the patients had vitamin D levels below 20 ng/mL, indicating a deficiency. The findings suggested a strong association between low vitamin D levels and increased PTH levels, highlighting the role of vitamin D deficiency in secondary hyperparathyroidism.
