TLDR Protecting hair and scalp from sunlight may help prevent hair loss.
Ultraviolet (UV) exposure may contribute to the development of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) by causing perifollicular inflammation through oxidative stress and microecological changes, and by inducing keratinocytes, melanocytes, and mast cells to participate in follicular microinflammation. Additionally, UV irradiation can lead to the aging of hair follicle stem cells, dermal papilla cells, and dermal fibroblasts, as well as an increase in elastic fibers, which promotes AGA. This review highlights recent literature to support the importance of protecting hair and scalp from sunlight as a preventive measure against AGA.
