TLDR Autologous serum, a substance from a patient's own blood, is effective in skin treatments for wound healing, skin rejuvenation, acne scars, and hair loss, with low risk of allergies or disease transmission.
Autologous serum, a component taken from a patient's blood, has been found to be beneficial in dermatology due to its growth factors (GF). This serum, which is also found in platelet-rich plasma (PRP), has been used as an alternative therapeutic modality in various medical fields. The use of autologous serum reduces the risk of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions and the transmission of infectious diseases. However, the availability of products with GF is still limited. A review of studies from 2015 to 2020 found that PRP serum, which contains GF, vitamins, hormones, and other components, is an effective therapeutic modality in dermatology for wound healing, skin rejuvenation, acne scar, and androgenic alopecia. Out of 333 papers initially found, only 14 met the inclusion criteria.
