TLDR The root extract of Untica mairei Levl may help treat benign prostatic hyperplasia.
The study investigated the inhibitory effect of various constituents in the extract of Untica mairei Levl on 5α-reductase activity. Using an in vitro model with 5α-reductase from male rat prostates, testosterone, and NADPH, the study measured DHT concentration via ELISA to assess enzyme activity. Finasteride served as a positive control to judge specificity. Results indicated that the n-butanol extractant from the roots of Untica mairei Levl, extracted with 95% alcohol, significantly inhibited 5α-reductase activity, suggesting its potential effectiveness in resisting benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
