TLDR Urtica dioica extract may help treat androgenic skin diseases by reducing a specific gene's activity.
The study investigates the effects of Urtica dioica (Ud) extract on the gene expression of 5α-reductase type II (5α-RII) in HaCaT skin cells, aiming to explore its potential against androgenic skin diseases. The researchers treated cultured HaCaT cells with Ud extract and performed real-time reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis to measure gene expression. The results showed a statistically significant downregulation of 5α-RII gene expression (p=0.0021) in treated cells, with a fold change of 0.5873±0.0586 compared to untreated cells. This suggests that Ud extract has anti-androgenic activity and potential therapeutic applications in cosmetic dermatology for treating androgenic skin conditions.
