TLDR Ursolic acid from Ochrosia elliptica leaves may help manage PCOS symptoms.
Ursolic Acid (UA), a compound isolated from Ochrosia elliptica leaves, shows promise in managing Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) symptoms, as demonstrated in a rat model study. PCOS was induced in female Wistar Albino rats, which were then treated with UA at doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg. The study found that UA, particularly at 50 mg/kg, effectively restored oxidative balance by reducing malondialdehyde levels and increasing superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. It also significantly lowered elevated luteinizing hormone and testosterone levels, with effects comparable to the standard medication clomiphene citrate. Histopathological improvements included reduced cystic follicles and increased corpus lutea. UA's action involves downregulating genes related to steroidogenesis and oxidative stress, suggesting its potential as a novel therapeutic option for PCOS, warranting further clinical research.
