TLDR Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common but often undiagnosed disorder in women that can cause irregular periods, infertility, and other symptoms, and can be managed with lifestyle changes, medication, and sometimes surgery.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a metabolic and endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age, with symptoms including menstrual irregularity, polycystic ovaries, hirsutism, infertility, insulin-resistance, and impaired glucose tolerance. The cause is unknown but may be linked to lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors. In India, PCOS prevalence ranges from 3.7% to 22.5%. Diagnosis is typically made using the Rotterdam diagnostic criteria. Management strategies include weight loss, exercise, behavioral therapy, and psychological counseling, as well as pharmacological treatments like oral contraceptive pills, metformin, anti-androgen agents, clomiphene citrate, and letrozole. Surgery is an option in certain cases. Despite its prevalence, PCOS is often underdiagnosed in India, highlighting the need for increased awareness and comprehensive treatment approaches.
