TLDR Divalproex sodium significantly improved headaches in two-thirds of patients.
In a study involving 30 patients with persistent chronic daily headaches unresponsive to other treatments, divalproex sodium was administered at doses of 1000 to 2000 mg per day over 3 months. The study found that two-thirds of the patients experienced significant improvement in headache symptoms, as measured by various indices including headache-free days and general well-being. Common side effects reported were weight gain, tremor, hair loss, and nausea, but liver function remained unaffected. The study suggested that valproate could be a valuable addition to the prophylactic treatment of chronic recurrent headaches.
