TLDR Trichoscopy is essential for diagnosing and managing alopecia areata in children.
A case report of a 4-year-old girl with alopecia areata (AA) highlights the importance of trichoscopy in diagnosing and managing pediatric AA. Initially presenting with a coin-sized bald spot that enlarged over nine months, the diagnosis was confirmed as toxoplasma-related AA through reactive toxoplasma IgG and trichoscopy. After six weeks of therapy, trichoscopy showed significant hair regrowth, demonstrating its value in monitoring treatment success. The study emphasizes that trichoscopy can reveal specific characteristics in pediatric AA and is crucial for distinguishing disease activity and guiding effective management.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
