TLDR Children with alopecia areata have more exclamation mark hairs and fewer yellow dots than adults.
This study compared trichoscopic features of alopecia areata (AA) between 62 children and 62 adults. It found that while most trichoscopic features did not significantly differ between age groups, yellow dots were more prevalent in adults (48.4%) and exclamation mark hairs were more common in children (38.7%). Significant correlations were observed in children between certain trichoscopic features and clinical symptoms, such as pigtail hairs with burning or itching. These findings suggest age-related variations in AA presentation and emphasize the need for age-specific diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
