The study utilized Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) to enhance the specificity and reliability of sub-cellular chemical mapping through the use of endogenous chemical species, three-dimensional dual-beam depth profiling, and multi-modal mass spectrometry approaches. This technique allowed for the confirmation of gunshot residue origin and the localization and quantification of anti-tumor drugs in glioblastoma cells. Additionally, it enabled the identification of molecular components in mosquito ovarian follicles and the mapping of de novo synthesized triacylglycerides in mosquitoes. A novel multi-modal imaging protocol was also developed for characterizing proteins and small molecules in human acute wound healing.
