TLDR Spironolactone may help improve symptoms and tear quality in dry eye disease.
A retrospective observational study on 102 patients with dry eye disease found that topical spironolactone, a medication with anti-mineralocorticoid, anti-androgenic, and anti-inflammatory properties, improved self-reported global assessment scores and visual acuity. The treatment also led to significant improvements in keratitis, conjunctival staining scores, and lid margin inflammation, particularly in patients with higher Schirmer's tear test scores. The study concluded that spironolactone may improve tear film quality and address the inflammatory processes associated with Meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye. However, further studies are needed to explore the long-term effects of this treatment.
