TLDR Calcipotriol doesn't prevent hypertrophic scars, but keratinocyte activation is important in scar formation.
The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of topical calcipotriol in preventing hypertrophic scars in 30 women who underwent bilateral reduction mammoplasty. Conducted as a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, the scars were treated for 3 months and evaluated at 3 weeks, 3 months, and 12 months postoperatively. The results showed no significant difference in hypertrophic scar prevalence between the calcipotriol and placebo groups. However, a strong association was found between keratinocyte activation and hypertrophic scar formation. Thus, calcipotriol did not reduce hypertrophic scar incidence, but keratinocyte activation was a key factor in scar development.
