TLDR Thymoma with alopecia areata may be linked to abnormal immune cells.
This study analyzed 428 thymoma patients, including 9 with alopecia areata (AA), and found that those with AA had a higher occurrence of myasthenia gravis and other paraneoplastic syndromes. All AA patients exhibited an inverted CD4+/CD8+ T lymphocyte ratio, suggesting abnormal CD8+ T lymphocytes may play a role in the pathogenesis of thymoma with AA. Surgical intervention improved AA symptoms in 8 out of 9 patients, indicating its effectiveness. The study also noted a higher proportion of Stage IV tumors in thymoma patients with AA, suggesting a link between CD8+ T lymphocytes and tumor progression. Further research is needed to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms and improve treatment strategies.
