TLDR Onion extracts can promote hair growth, but quercetin is not responsible.
This study investigated the effects of Allium cepa (onion) extracts on hair growth using an alopecia model in C57BL/6N mice. The antioxidative activities of the extracts were assessed, and quercetin content was measured. Mice were divided into six groups, including controls and various treatments with onion extracts. Quercetin was found in fresh onion juice at 47.49 ppm but was not detected in other fractions. The study concluded that hair-promoting activity was observed in the fraction without quercetin, suggesting that quercetin was not related to hair growth, and other compounds in A. cepa should be explored for their potential effects on hair growth.
